What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine addresses the underlying, or root causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engages both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.

Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with what is sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise. In our practice of functional medicine, we take an in-depth history and create a timeline to understand how your life events have contributed to your health status. We often utilize questionnaires and the latest laboratory testing to guide our plans to support your body healing. Our action plans include combinations of medications, botanicals, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, lifestyle adjustments and stress-management techniques.

What are the options for membership at XO Health?

We partner with patients as consultants to support progress towards your health goals.

We do not provide 24/7 concierge care. We are also not a typical primary care office as we may not be available outside of office hours.

New members are asked to join at a Silver membership level. In subsequent years of care, many patients may need less intense amounts of care.

Does XO Health offer both telehealth and in-person visits?

Dr. Brossfield provides most of her consultations via Zoom telehealth visits. If there is a need for an in-person visit, Dr. Brossfield may ask you to come into the office if you are able. We do provide annual exams once yearly to many of our members.

Other than my membership fees, what other costs might I expect?

Labs: If you have PPO insurance or Medicare, most blood tests are likely to be covered by your insurance. There are often specialty labs that Dr. Brossfield will recommend however that are not covered by insurance. These specialty lab fees may cost between $250 and $1,500 depending on complexity of condition and level of diagnostics required. Conditions that require specialty testing include, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, Mold Illness, Vector-Borne Illness such as Bartonella or Lyme Disease, as well as SIBO and Microbiome testing.

Supplements:  The fee for supplements that Dr. Brossfield may recommend is typically between $75 and $400. You have the choice of purchasing supplements through Dr. Brossfield or from any other source you would prefer.

Are your services covered by insurance?

We do not submit any insurance claims on behalf of our patients. However, we can provide a superbill for individual clinic visits that include appropriate billing codes for patients who want to submit claims to their insurance company for potential reimbursement.

Dr. Brossfield has “opted-out” of Medicare meaning she does not bill Medicare directly for services rendered and Medicare beneficiaries are not able to submit superbills to Medicare for reimbursement. However, when Dr. Brossfield orders a service (such as a lab order or an imaging procedure), that procedure may be covered by your insurance, including Medicare, but will be billed by the facility where the service is performed.

Does XO Health provide primary care?

We are a consultation practice, and do not provide comprehensive primary care. We ask that you maintain a relationship with a primary care physician and expect to see that physician for acute illness or prescriptions aside from those Dr. Brossfield orders.

What is your visit cancellation policy?

We understand that life can be unpredictable and you may at times have to cancel appointments. We are happy to accept cancellations up to 24 hours before a visit. If a patient misses a confirmed appointment a charge of ¼ of a credit is applied to the account.
